Do you know the difference between a justification and an excuse?
Both are rationalizations for not doing something that you planned on doing. The thinking behind those rationalizations is what sets them apart.
A justification is a one-off event. Something that is unplanned and outside of your control. It is something you cannot adjust for or plan around. Your plan will change temporarily to accommodate, and life will go on. These should not hold you back. They are not frequent or regular. We need to manage them and then resume course.
An excuse is a recurring theme or thought pattern. It will always hold you back if you allow it. It exposes your weaknesses and controls your thoughts if you let it. These will hold you back because they are regular. You must understand and deal with them to be able to move on.
If you are honest with yourself, you know you can train another time to make up the missed workout, or go the extra mile to get it in, but you don't. You know you can wait to eat or order food close to plan when faced with a situation that has you away from your food longer than expected. If the excuse wins, we become a victim of circumstance and let an inconvenience destroy a day, possibly a week, of progress by making poor decisions.
True progress comes when you identify these excuses to yourself and master them.
